No trip to Katherine is complete without a visit to Nitmiluk National Park - Katherine Gorge!

Nitmiluk National Park covers a vast area of escarpment country, including 13 stunning gorges that have been carved over time from ancient sandstone.

Visitors to the park can explore the sights in many different ways …

By Boat or Helicopter

Paddling along the gorges in a hired canoe you will see waterfalls, Aboriginal rock art and wildlife. If you prefer that someone else does the sailing hop on a sunrise cruise or speedboat to sightsee the area.

There are helicopter flights departing from near the visitor centre for those interested in enjoying the spectacular aerial view of the gorge system and the extensive Arnhem Land plateau.

On Foot - Walk the Jatbula Trail

Keen walkers may like to hike the five-day 62 km Jatbula Trail that takes in the sights of tumbling waterfalls, monsoon forest, rocky outcrops, scenic swimming spots and ancient Aboriginal rock art. The trail starts at the visitor centre and ends at Leliyn (Edith Falls.)

Don’t forget to check trail conditions permit and fee requirements and go prepared. More information can be found at Nitmiluk National Park Walks.

Stunning Natural Swimming Holes

Take a relaxing dip at Leliyn (Edith Falls), this paperbark and pandanus-fringed plunge pool on the park’s western boundary is perfect for a swim. If you’re up for a walk take the scenic 4.5km walking track from Leliyn (Edith Falls), to Sweetwater Pool. *note that some swimming holes may be closed at times between November to April.

Aboriginal Owners

Don’t forget to stop by Nitmiluk Visitor Centre to learn about the cultural and spiritual significance of the gorge for its traditional owners, the Jawoyn and Dagomen people. Keep an eye out for the many Aboriginal rock art paintings on sandstone walls throughout the gorge system, some of these are thousands of years old.
